Roger Federer and Alexandr Dolgopolov meet in the first round of the 2017 Wimbledon.
Roger Federer took off the entire clay season and came back by winning the Halle Open. Federer enters this tournament in great form considering he’s won 11 of his last 12 sets played and is coming off a match against Alexander Zverev in which he won 51 percent of his return points. Federer has made the final in four of his last six tournaments and has to be a strong bet to make another run here given his form. Federer hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2003 French Open. Federer hasn’t lost in the first round of the Wimbledon since 2002. Federer has won 10 of his last 12 matches on grass court.
Gentlemens Wimbledon Singles
Alexandr Dolgopolov has two grass court matches under his belt this season and has struggled with consistency since winning the Argentina Open back in February. We know what Dolgopolov is capable of when he’s feeling good, and his ability to hit a ton of winners gives him a chance against anybody on any given day. However, Dolgopolov hasn’t looked good on grass court in quite some time. Dolgopolov has made it out of the first round of a grand slam in five of his last seven appereances. Dolgopolov hasn’t lost in the first round of the Wimbledon since 2011. Dolgopolov has 10 career wins over top-10 players with one coming this season. Dolgopolov has split his last eight matches on grass court.
These two have met three times and Federer has won every meeting. The most recent match was in the 2016 Australian Open, a match Federer won in straight sets. Every match was decided in straight sets. This will be the first match on grass court.
If you read my Wimbledon preview that included dark horse future bets, you’ll know that Federer was my pick to win this tournament. It’s an even stronger bet with Murray dealing with hip issues. This match won’t be an issue for Roger, as he wins in straight sets.
